Dunfermline Knights Second string got back to winning ways on Saturday against 3rd Placed Edinburgh University Staff after 5 back to back defeats.
Winning the toss Richard Cox Jnr elected to bowl first. Uni Staff got off to a slow start with opening bowlers Graveling and Shipley tying them down. There were a few dropped chances but nothing costly as the Knights bowling attack bowled out the opposition for 191. After the tight start the pick of the bowlers was Richard Cox (Snr) who picked up three wickets for 37 runs while the rest of the knights bowling attack kept things tight.
In reply the Knights got off to the worst possible start losing Shaun Davidson for a golden duck. However the Knights made a great recovery with Jordan Davidson and David Miller putting on a 107 partnership for the second wicket before Jordan was bowled for 47. The Knights ended up winning in the 36th over by 4 wickets with Miller top scoring with 60 and Neil Service contributing a quick fire 34 before David Cooper smashed the winning run. The knights look forward to a home tie next weekend with a local derby against Broomhall where hopefully a winning streak can be continued..
Ok into the match in a bit more detail now. Not too much more as the main stuff has already been said.
I don’t have the scorebook in front of me this week so can’t go into specifics as Mr Scribbler celebrating his BIG 40 wouldn’t let me take it. Happy Birthday though Graeme.
Richard Jnr continues to be the top tosser – winning another toss and making a brave decision to bowl first – turned out to be a very good decision. The justification being that we had not performed in recent games batting first so was time to try chasing.
The game plan early on was to contain the batsmen – and not let them off to a flyer. This would then put pressure on the batsmen to score and subsequently give us their wickets.
With this in mind Shipley and Graveling with a combined age of 102 (only kidding) opened the bowling. Keith was beating the bat with regular occurrence – while Vince had the batsman in awe at the variation in his deliveries. There was an early chance dropped by Keeper Mushy Beg off Shipley's bowling but this did not prove costly.
Wickets were not coming quickly but runs were not coming for the Uni either. I think by the time drinks arrived the hosts were only on around 60 runs at most for a few wickets.
The opening stance for Uni Staff was 39 – but this came in what seemed like 20 over’s. Vince’s bowling figures say it all with 10overs none for 27 – a run rate of 2.7.
Vince was unlucky not to take any wickets – with Doc Service dropping a dolly fired to him off a Shipley ‘special wicket taking full toss’ at mid wicket – and there was the early drop from Mushy.
Keith unfortunately thought he was thirty years younger at one point when he tried to throw the ball in and ended up in agony as his arm went into Spasm. This meant he had to come off bowling prematurely – with him being replaced by Shaun the Mighty Prawn. Shaun should have had an early scalp when the batsman skied the ball for a regulation catch at Mid-On to Jordan. However with no cap on and the sun in his eyes Jordan only succeeded in headering the ball into the ground – thankfully he got some of his hand onto it otherwise would have been a sore one.
Richard Snr replaced Vince at the nearer the hockey pitch end – and bowled tightly – although im not convinced that short cover and short leg were required.
Richard picked up 3 wickets for 37 runs in his ten over’s.
Shaun didn’t bowl as well as normal – but he is still on the mend from his shoulder injury – but I think he still picked up a wicket.
With ten over’s to go finally Doc Service was brought into the attack – he bowled a fine tight spell – picking up a wicket and also brilliantly running out the non striker with an elegant piece of work touching the straight drive from the batsman straight onto the stumps.
Skipper Jnr Cox – bowled the last 5 over’s from the other end with a mixture of spin and medium pace bamboozling the batsman – and he picked up another 2 tail Enders to add to his growing wicket tally this year.
The Uni Staff did manage to recover from their slow start to post a precarious total of 191. We had hoped to keep this fewer than 180 but it wasn’t to be.
This was a better fielding and bowling display this week – but still far from good. Too many dropped catches yet again – culprits being – Graveling x2, Beg, Davidson and Service. The top fielder on the day was Mike Snape who let nothing past him and picked up the ball cleanly at every attempt.
Tea was had – and it was a nice day for a picnic.
On to the batting – Davidson and Davidson Ginger went out to open. They stood around for a while awaiting Shipley to come from behind the hut having a pit stop.
So the match restarted – Jordan kicked the first ball away for one to let his Father on strike. The bowler pitched the next delivery outside off stump – but with it swinging or seaming in Shaun managed to play the ball on to his stumps for a quite glorious second golden duck of the year. (I have heard rumours its no longer going to be known as a golden duck but instead a ginger duck)
This brought Miller to the crease at 3 – who after struggling in the first over was quickly into his stride against the visitors pace attack – who were swinging the new ball a mile. The bad balls were cracked onto with aplomb and despatched to the boundary. Jordan at the other end was not looking in his usual form – scratching the ball around.
However when the Staff brought spin into attack Jordan took full advantage. He was whacking the ball to all parts while Miller was quite happy to give him the strike. Jordan unfortunately came down the track once too many and was bowled by ‘Richard’ for 47. Another failure to get 50 – but again a flourishing knock despite his slow start. The partnership had amounted to around 108 and had the Knights well on course for victory with only 20 oversish having been bowled if that.
Mushy arrived at the crease – and out of match practise looked a bit out of shape – however he did connect with a few but was caught out for about 12.
Neil Service then came in and whacked his first ball for 4 over covers. With the first slip sarcastically applauding him in an amusing manner saying nice shot nice shot Neil answered this by smacking the next ball for 4 through the covers.
The pair put on a few runs before Miller fell caught at point trying to see off the Uni Staffs impressive spin bowler – ill add his name when I see the book. A well constructed and patient 60.
This brought Richard Cox Snr to the crease – for a short time – well one ball – his bails were off and as the bowler celebrated in an overexuberent manner Mr Cox took offence saying a few words of his own.
Mike Snape then went out to bat – then Neil Service after smacking a huge six was bowled for 34 allowing Super Cooper in to bat.
The score at this stage was tied – 191 each – so who would be the hero. Well the money was on Mike – who was on strike.
With the team watching on the boundary ready to cheer – the bowler bowled a peach and whacked Mike right in the …………. All we heard was an almighty whack…and saw Mike rhything about in agony. (Oh fill in the blank yourself but think of cream crackers)
So no it wasn’t Mikes big Day – next over to Coops – a couple of dot balls – then Coops with his brand new £120 bat bought from our pro Alistair Gray whacked the ball through mid wicket for 1 and he let of an almighty scream as we celebrated our first win since the opening day of the season.
Coops told Jordan apparently that he had absolutely smashed the ball – it wasn’t until he was walking off that he realised the ball had stopped about 30 yards away from the boundary rope – so instead of being 4 not out he was 1 not out – but still Coops was the match winner.
This was a steady batting display apart from Golden boys Davidson Snr and Cox Snr. Jordan was quick scoring again – Miller held the innings together and Service applied some quick runs which got us close enough to the target so that we could win by 4 wickets with about 14 over’s to spare.
We finally seem to have the wicket keeping spot sorted out with Mushy performing well for 50 over’s – so no keeper changes required although Mushy is still a bit rusty with the bat but this will improve the more games he gets.
We also seemed to have a more balanced side with everyone getting in on the act – the bolwers bowled and the batters batted. So hopefully we can get a more settled side and continue to improve after today’s encouraging display.
On to the local derby with Broomhall next week – if we can keep the same sort of balanced side then we should be in with a good shout…….here’s hoping.

Dunf2XI end winning run
Stephen Malkin, 22 June 2010 08:49
We turned up at peffermill on a lovely sunny day to play on the east pitch for the first time this season.
We lost the toss, got put into bat with Steve and Vijay opening the batting putting on 39 for the first wicket before Vijay was bowled for 21. Ranald came and went for a quick 7. Richard joined Steve at the crease and was looking to get set for a big score. We had drinks, Richard and Steve were looking to up the tempo, Richard played a lovely pull shot for 4 but then mis-judged the line to be plumb LBW for 16. Steve soon followed Richard to the pavilion when he was dismissed LBW for 37 (although the skipper insists he got an inside edge!!) Alan and Jeremy were then left to re-build, hitting some lusty blows and upping the run-rate but neither could convert their good starts to a big score, both being bowled by the same bowler for 13 and 11 respectively. This brought in Sethu and Srikanth to try and get a respectable total with 15 overs remaining. Sethu was running with the aid of a zimmer frame as his continued his recovery from his knee injury and played some lovely shots before being bowled for 18. Amjad then joined Srikanth at the crease. Amjad was his usual self, mixing his elegant cut strokes with his chaotic running, however he was not a fault for his runout (a first for everything!!) when Srikanth played a lovely drive only for the ball to hit the bowlers boot and ricochet off the non strikers stumps with Amjad out of the crease. Mikhail then came in to join Srikanth who was modelling a new haircut as he was fed up of looking like a girl and this obviously worked as he hit a massive six and some brutal boundary shots before being caught near the boundary for a quick and well made 29. Last batsman Kevin joined Mikhail to muster as many runs as possible off the last couple of overs, Mikhail hit a couple of sweet boundary shots, before Kevin was bowled in the last over for 2, leaving staff with a total of 191 to defend.
We ate tea, Amjad was explaining to Srikanth how to drive the ball wide of the bowler as not to repeat the freakish runout again.........
Srikanth and Amjad opened the bowling, Srikanth got a wicket with his 3rd delivery when the batsman inside edged onto the stumps for a perfect start. Amjad bowled tight at the other end yielding 4 runs from his first 4 overs. Meanwhile Srikanth was far from perfect as he delivered a series of wides (very wide) deliveries that Richard fielding at first slip assisted Kevin in stopping! This combined with a series of filthy full tosses meant Dunfermline were starting to race along. Mikhail came on for Srikanth in a bid to stem the runs, however he looked out of sorts struggling for any rhythm. Vijay came on for Amjad and Richard for Mikhail in an attempt to slow the ball down. The opening bat was insistent on trying to hit Richard out of the park every ball and whilst he hit a some lusty blows it was only a matter of time before Kevin had him stumped. But the damage was already done as the 2nd wicket partnership for Dunfermline was 108 off just 17 overs leaving staff needing some quick wickets. Meanwhile their number 3 bat Miller was constructing a sensible innings at the other end and with plenty of overs in hand the game was well in their control. Dunfermline kept the score board ticking over, Vijay kept testing the batsman and was finally rewarded with 2 wickets off his last two balls dismissing the no 3 for a well made 60 and removing the number 6 for a golden duck. These wickets were a little too late as 20 runs were needed with 6 wickets in hand. Jeremy came on with his first bowl for a year and was unlucky not to have a wicket when a catch was put down. Srikanth and Amjad then came back on in a last desperate attempt to get 6 wickets! This was to be too much and although Srikanth picked up 2 more wickets, Dunfermline eased home with 4 wickets to spare and 14 overs in hand.
In the end a disappointing result for staff who were never in the hunt, too many of our batsman made starts but could not go on to get a big score and with the exception of Amjad and our man of the match Vijay our bowling performance was poor.
