vs Dunfermline Carnegie (2010-06-13)

The big Derby day arrived – the much awaited clash of the Titans – Dunfermline Knights 2s Versus Dunfermline Carnegie – who would win the bragging rights from this one.

Well since I didn’t turn up until the game had already started this report may be a bit sketchy.  I was delayed due to trying to get around the Marathon Traffic and also the fact I couldn’t get out my bed due to the fact it was raining outside and the excesses of the night before.

Well to the parts I saw……..

Richard ‘top tosser’ Cox (Jnr) won the toss and elected to bat – the rain had stopped by now…..The game got underway at 1.31.

Jordan and Mush opened for the Hosts – while Murray and Mitchell opened the attack for Carnegie.  The Knights got off to a bad start – Mushy splashed one up to Callan at Point off Murray for a 9 ball duck.

Miller was in at 3 (Having just arrived and padded up)

Davidson and Miller settled in well – seeing easily off the opening bowlers – who didn’t go for many runs.

Jordan was playing his normal flourishing strokes – sixes and fours galore while Miller was picking off the bad ball quite easily on a good batting track.

The Score got to 69 when Miller fell LBW to 2nd Change bowler Pringle – playing the first ball of the over right across the line with an attempted sweep.  Mushy quite rightly triggered his colleague.  (Notice Jamie and Colin – I give credit when there is a good decision) this was Millers 3rd LBW dismissal of the season.

Jordan was then joined and the crease by the one and only Ginger Prawn (Jordan’s father Shaun)

They could only muster a partnership of 2 before Jordan decided that he didn’t like batting with his father (and also didn’t like getting into the 50s) when he was Ct by Honeyford of the bowling of Carnegie man of the Match Walker.

Hurricane Humphreys came and went – Ct Philip Bowled Walker for 5.

R Cox Snr was Ct Urolagin at slip of the bowling of Pringle for a quack.

Leitchy the most prolific run scorer in the 3s this year got his first runs in 3 attempts for the 2s this season……he scored 4 of 7 balls before having his bails dismantled by Murray.

R Cox Jnr attempting a captains innings was adjudged LBW by Shandy wielding Miller.

V Shipley managed to get of the mark for the season with 2 before being bowled by the unusually subdued Mitchell.

This left Tom the Fuhrer Gibson at number 10 – who played a not out innings scoring 2 of 1 ball.  When Gibson went back into the dressing room in disgust launching his bat into the dressing room we thought this is because he had not managed to get any run out victims this week - however it turns out it was because he doesnt like batting at ten!!!

All this time Shaun has seen off the bowling back in his own style facing 43 balls to score 31 NO.

Poor young Douglas Petrie didn’t get to bat.

So all in all not a good batting performance – it should be noted the game was reduced to 30 overs a side due to the conditions – but 125 on a good track never looked enough.

There was one moment of controversy when Miller at square leg thought the ball was dead of the bowling of Pringle and started talking to Nelly at Square Leg.  John Hynd took the bails off and had a huge appeal – Miller quite rightly gave not out as he never saw it – but ‘perhaps’ should have been looking – but we will never know.  When questioning the other umpire Chris Humphreys what happened – he said he didn’t know as he looked away also thinking the ball was dead.  The uproar from the keeper was appeared OTT – but thankfully forgotten after the game.  Shaun himself wasn’t sure what had happened he said he thinks his bat was down but wasn’t sure.  So with no Replays we will never know.  But perhaps we should be investing in new technology.  Could be another job for Johnny with the camcorder!!!!!  There was also a delayed no ball signaled by Miller at the same time which was rightly a no ball which sent Pike of Carnegie off on a Rage – but again correct decision.  The fact I had a pint of Shandy in my hands at the time maybe added to the outrage rather than the decisions themselves – but a hair of the dog was required.

Anyway that’s a rant about that over…..Back to the game….

Oh teas – well done to Nancy for putting together at short notice – they were great.

Carnegie took up the chase with Lafferty and Walker….both looked solid at the outset.  Hurricane Humphreys was giving them a working over with the ball – but Mushy was proving a bit wayward.  Mush did get the prized scalp of Lafferty though with the ball of the day – which pitched outside off and cut back in leaving Matt bowled all ends up for 11.  Score was now 16 for 1.

John Hynd came to the crease – (John scored 51 on his last visit to Mckane with Townhill last season)

John and Neil Walker put on a match winning partnership of 56 before Hynd was adjudged LBW to Big Richard for 27.  M Callan then came in and put on 20 with Walker before Walker was bowled by the Ginger one for 28.

M Callan and J Murray then saw Carnegie through to their target in the 29th over – though with 7 wickets In hand this was really a stroll in the park for Carnegie.

In the field we need to work on a lot of things – Catching (Douglas) Stumpings (Jordan – was there 3 chances) the general lackluster display in the fields is not great – but some of our stars are ageing so that’s to be expected.

Stand out bowler was the Hurricane – giving the Carnegie Batters a good workout – 6 overs for 14.  Vince was brought into the attack too late to have any affect on the game while Jordan went for 13 in one over and Richard Jnr 9.

We did miss the bowling of Keith Graveling who called off ill on the day of the match and also the batting prowess and general presence of Dave Booney Hinds who also called off on match day because England had only drawn with the USA the night before.  (Or was it because his child was ill?? – Or was Dave Hung-over?? – answers on a postcard – sorry Dave)

We need to look to next week and look at Batting/Bowling and fielding.

Watching Carnegie bat and especially Walker and Hynds partnership – they ran some brilliant singles – perhaps because we were not alert enough in the field – but this is what won Carnegie the game.  We perhaps need to focus on picking up all runs that are available rather than hitting boundaries. Walker’s inning of 28 included 14 singles – in contrast Jordan’s innings of 46 included only 7 and Millers 21 only 1!!!!

The keeping slot is a problem – as was pointed out by a certain Balding chubby bloke – with an English accent – no first class team change keepers during a game so why do we.

On a funnier note young Douglas brought the biggest smile to everyone’s faces on a bleak day – by asking the backing up batsmen to move as he was in his way…….

Anyway – hopefully on to brighter days for the 2s next week away to Ed Uni Staff
