Match Report
vs Preston Village 2nd X1 (2010-05-15)
So, first outing as captain for me vs Preston Village for the 3rd XI was an interesting prospect, left with only ten players by various call offs and dubious excuses (Chris H) from previously selected players.
I can honestly say this was one of my enjoyable experiences in the three seasons I have been back playing, the team which contained six kids, competed on all fronts as we chose to bat first and posted 110 (about 20 or so short of what I thought would have been competitive) We opened with two of the kids in Ben and Scott, who got us off to a promising start, before Scott has caught down the leg side. A few wickets fell quickly after, before David Timmins came in and scored a few quick runs to get us going again. Then I came in and Ben and myself put on some good runs and started to get us up towards a competitive total. I went just after drinks to one that I should have done better with, but Ben continued the runs, ably assisted by the rest of the team. So we ended up with 110 off of 33 odd over’s, a great effort from the team, just a little short of what I’d hoped for.
The defence of our total was diligent throughout, all our bowlers and fielders all performed brilliantly and there were only a couple of chances we failed to take, Preston managed to make the total with about 5 over’s to spare and I am convinced that, had we had a full team, we would have had an excellent chance to pull off the win as they were definitely felling the pressure as the wickets were falling towards the end. But none the less, that should not take away from a really good days cricket, an excellent effort from the team and one they should all be proud of.
As a captain you don’t want to make a habit of losing, but I honestly believe this lot won’t lose many more matches as they will develop into a great team given time and anytime they need a stand in skipper again, I’ll be there in a second, it will be my pleasure.....................
